Synonym Match

Click a word on the left, then click its synonym on the right. Match all eight pairs to advance to the next round. Unlimited rounds, no account needed.

Synonym matching is an effective vocabulary technique because it forces you to compare words by meaning rather than memorise definitions in isolation. Seeing that 'beautiful' pairs with 'lovely' — and understanding the slight difference in tone — is more durable learning than reading each definition separately.

FAQ

Questions people ask

How does the Synonym Match game work?

Click a word on the left side, then click its closest synonym on the right side. A correct match removes both words from the board. An incorrect match shows a brief error state so you can try again. Match all eight pairs to complete the round and advance to the next.

Why is matching synonyms useful for learning vocabulary?

Synonyms show you how meaning can be expressed with different words of different tone, formality, or specificity. Matching practice trains you to see vocabulary as a range of choices rather than one fixed word per meaning — which makes both reading comprehension and writing more flexible.

What words are used in the synonym match game?

All pairs come from Word Helper's Word Explorer. Each word has a full page with definition, pronunciation, examples, and word family. After playing, visit the Word Explorer to study any pairs you found difficult.

How many rounds can I play?

There are unlimited rounds. Each round uses a new set of eight word-synonym pairs drawn from the full pool. The pool is large enough to keep rounds varied across many sessions.
